Originally discovered in 1895, nothing more was heard of them until 1923 when Dr. Delacour went on an expedition to central Vietnam. A number of pairs were trapped and a total of fifteen birds where shipped and successfully bred in the US.

Status in Captivity: Reasonable, but vulnerable due to inbreeding.
